Things I Never Want To Forget

The Friday evening one day after the California Supreme Courts landmark gay marriage decision, our Rabbinic intern stomping on a glass, the congregation yelling Mazel Tov!, and dancing in a joyful impromptu hora around the congregation.

A New Blog Baby

So, I have decide that I have way too many opinions (not to mention way to much of a need to vent) about weddings to burden you all with it here.  So, after thought, discussion with David, and quite a bit of work, I'm proud to announce the second in the 'practical' family of blogs: A Practical Wedding.  It's a little bit Offbeat Bride, a little bit Style Me Pretty, a little bit Indie Bride and a whole lot of Me.  I'll keep posting on more personal stuff here, but I wanted a venue for practical discussions on weddings, and nothing out there was quite what I needed, so I decided to start something up.  And all you sanely married couples that I know... I might just be asking you if you would be willing to pass along some advice on what you learned during the whole wedding process.

Let me know what you think.

A Blackberry Season Wedding?

A blackberry season wedding?, originally uploaded by Megasus.

So, you'll have to forgive my engagement addled wits, and manage through the third wedding related post this week. I'm also thinking a lot about credit default swaps, which are probably less interesting.

This first crack at a style board came out of me wanting to use the ever present Northern California summer brambles of blackberry and pink Jasmine as part of the flowers, and that made us start playing around with dark blue and light pink as colors.

As two former theatre producers, David and are having way too much fun thinking about this wedding. Why hire vendors, when you can have all the fun yourself?

I hope 27 is as happy and adventurous as 26.

Symbols, more important than I realized

So I sort of figured I had the engagement ring thing all figured out. I'd wanted the simple platinum (or white gold, or silver, who cares) ring with a single solitaire diamond.
Then when we started looking around at rings, it got a little complicated. We started off at your run of the mill jewelers, and I'd tell them what size stone I was looking for and they'd try to up-sell us. They were pushing stones at me that were bigger then I wanted and a small fortune at that. Then, I started noticing that the rings felt a little soulless. Pretty and sparkly, but sort of empty. So, after much soul searching I came up with a list of what I was looking for (I don't, by the way, think everyone should value these things in a ring).

  • A ring I could wear in a board room, and not be embarrassed by.
  • A ring that wouldn't feel outdated in 10 or 15 years.
  • Something that had character.
  • Something I could wear in a third world country and not look like "HEY! I'M A AMERICAN! MUG ME!"
  • Something I could wear doing work in a housing project or a soup kitchen or just back in San Bernardino, and not look like a asshole.
  • Something that was beautiful.
I was afraid my list was near impossible. But then we found it. A estate diamond ring from the 1920's, in a gay antique store in the Castro. The specialize in estate jewelry and vintage gay porn. We just went with the ring. This time.

The Sunshine of My Life

I am so pleased to finally be able to share the news that, exactly two weeks ago today David and got engaged!
David managed to surprise me, the unsurprisable.  He picked me up after a terrible day at work to take a walk, and we went to one of our favorite places in San Francisco, The Filbert Street Steps.  In my bossy bossy way, I insisted that we go to Napier Lane, a tiny lane that leads off the steps, which is the only boardwalk street left in San Francisco.  At the end of the lane I asked David if he wanted to live in one of the houses with me, and he said yes, and gave me a hug.  I noticed that his little heart was pounding away, and I was worried.  Then he told me to close my eyes, and when I opened them there was a beautiful ring, and he asked me to marry him.
After a stunned silence, I said yes!  Then we sat on this bench for a little bit, and recovered from the shock of it all.

We are really excited (how many times have I used the word excited in this post?) and enjoying being newly engaged.
